The Bison

We’re fascinated by the bison. We want to restore the presence of this majestic animal to its native homelands of Western Canada, living in the most natural way possible.

From the brink of extinction...

Rich in history, the bison saga is intertwined with North America’s native cultures. They once roamed in their millions across the continent, providing everything the first Americans needed to survive a harsh and inhospitable environment.

When the Europeans arrived, bison were killed only for their hides and tongues. They were slaughtered in greater numbers than any other time in history and by 1890 extinction was imminent.

… to salvation

Thankfully, private and public conservation efforts brought bison numbers back from the brink. For some time, bison were only found in national parks and zoos but gradually small herds were started on private ranches.

By the 1980s, these ranchers had enough products to sell beyond their farm gates and a new industry was sparked
by public appetite for this frontier meat. Today, bison meat is part of a growing market for discerning connoisseurs
with a thriving population of over 500,000 animals.

The ultimate ecological engineer

Bison were once an integral part of the North American landscape, and the engineers of a healthy, balanced ecosystem.

Where they forage and roam, they fertilize land, aerate soil and disperse seeds. Their natural gardening leads to thriving native plants with deep roots. More carbon is sequestered in the root curtain, more water is absorbed and retained.

Healthy grassland attracts wildlife and insects plus billions of microorganisms living in healthy soil. The result is a vibrant, active, diverse ecosystem versus the barren cash crop fields of modern farming.

Healthy ecosystems are the key to a more sustainable future. For everyone.

About our journey of regeneration

If our animals are happy, we’re happy

Healthy, happy animals have their physical and mental needs met. We support our ranchers to achieve the utmost in animal welfare following this philosophy and the Code of Practice for Care and Handling of Bison in Canada.

As far as possible, we provide conditions that mimic bison in the wild. They have the space to roam, and the freedom to graze native grasslands and express their natural behavior.

This provides the diet bison were naturally designed to digest, and free roaming animals are less likely to get sick. For that reason, our bison are free of antibiotics, steroids and hormones, and produce superior meat.
